Who Am I?
My name is Sophie James, and I am a neurodivergent mentor supporting children, teens, adults, and parents in better understanding themselves and navigating a world that isn’t always designed with neurodivergent minds in mind. I first became aware that I was autistic at the age of 13, and I was formally diagnosed at 17. Later, at around 18–19, I was also diagnosed ADHD.
Growing up, I navigated the neurotypical schooling system, where exams, friendships, and daily life often felt confusing and overwhelming. While I had some reasonable adjustments at school, I didn’t have the guidance or support to manage my own life, and I often struggled to understand myself.
Being neurodivergent in a world designed for neurotypical brains taught me first-hand how challenging environments can be—but also how to navigate, adapt, and thrive. I have lived through the full experience of studying A-levels, moving on to university and studying a marine biology degree, and living independently—all as a young autistic and ADHD woman. Along the way, I have travelled and volunteered internationally, from solo flights to Canada, solo internships in Egypt, sea turtle volunteering in Cape Verde, and exploring many other countries.
These experiences, combined with 4+ years of neurodivergent peer-mentoring from the age of 18, have given me practical, real-world insight into managing education, independence, and new environments as a neurodivergent person. I now draw on these experiences to guide others, sharing strategies and support to help them thrive in neurotypical spaces, understand themselves better, and feel empowered to succeed.
I created my advocacy page in 2020 to connect with the neurodivergent community, inspired by my father, Jordan James, The Autistic Photographer, who always encouraged me to embrace being different. Those who follow my advocacy page have witnessed my experiences as a young autistic and ADHD girl, alongside me as I tackled new challenges and situations. Through mentoring, I discovered my real passion for helping neurodivergent children, teens, young adults, and parents. I now focus on sharing practical strategies, guidance, and encouragement—exactly what I wish I had when I was younger.
My approach is rooted in lived experience and a solid understanding of neurodivergent brains. I use reflection sheets, interactive tasks, and practical strategies to help individuals understand themselves, manage neurotypical environments, and feel empowered, validated, and supported.
For more insight into my lived experience and approach, you can explore my Facebook page, home to a community of over 10,000 people.
What began as a way to find community has evolved into something more. I’m proud of what I have achieved, and I am even more excited for what’s ahead.
What sets me apart isn’t just my approach—it’s the intention behind it. I take time to understand, explore, and learn with purpose at every turn.
